Today, 1/1/12 we left Snug Harbor, RI at 5 AM oard the 76` ISLAND CURRENT III with a decent crowd of anglers. Worked the same grounds we have been fishing for the past week and had a slow pick of cod all on the drift. Then decided to steam further to the east and we had a more steady pick of cod. Everyone went home with fish and the hi-hook of the day was Cis from NY with 5 keepers. Today, pool fish was 11 pounds and most guys had a couple of green cod per man. As in the past five trips, the jigs have been producing more cod than the bait. There were lots of mackerel and even a few nice baseball bat whiting. The conditions all look very promising with temperatures dropping and a surplus of bait in the area.
Since the bite has been mostly during the day, we will continue to sail at 5 AM until we feel an early departure time will be more productive.
